Google and Microsoft remove ModHeader extension after security experts discover malicious code designed to steal user information.
Two of the world's largest technology companies have taken swift action to protect their users by removing a widely-used browser extension from their official stores. The ModHeader tool, which had been downloaded more than 1.6 million times, contained hidden malicious code that could silently collect sensitive information from users' computers.
The discovery came from security researchers who identified what experts are calling CrashStealer—a type of malware designed specifically to target Apple computers. What makes this particular threat unusual is how it operates. Rather than using common programming approaches that other hackers typically employ, this malware was built using a different method that made it harder to detect.
Think of browser extensions like apps you install on your phone—they can do helpful things, but they also get access to sensitive parts of your device. ModHeader was marketed as a legitimate productivity tool that helps developers and advanced users manage their internet connections. The problem? Someone had quietly added a dangerous backdoor into this trusted application.
The malware worked like a thief hidden inside a delivery truck. While the truck (the extension) appeared legitimate on the surface, someone had been using it to break into homes (computers) and steal valuables (personal data). The stolen information could have included passwords, browsing history, financial details, and other confidential information stored on affected machines.
This discovery happened while the malicious code was dormant—meaning it wasn't actively stealing data yet, but had the capability to do so once activated. This is similar to finding a bomb that hasn't exploded rather than dealing with an active attack.
This incident demonstrates why staying informed about technology threats and maintaining healthy skepticism—even toward popular tools—remains one of your best defenses in the digital world.
